Avant-Garde Prints: Wassily Kandinsky
The Avant-garde Movement was considered to be a controversial period of cultural resistance from the upper-class, high brow and traditional norms of 17th century France. Avant-garde artists aimed to resist the status quo and challenged society to go beyond the convential practices of society. The Avant-garde movement was also considered to be the It was also considered to be a trademark of the Modernist movement although the avant-garde movement had more of a political or social reformist feel that opposed culture brought on by the industrial revolution.
Some of the most renowned artists in history belonged to this period. Museums and art shops continue to sell postcards or poster of their work to meet popular demands. One of the most famous avant-garde works are from Wassily Kandinsky. Kandindsky was a Russian born artist who did not initially begin his career as a painter but chose to become one instead of pursuing jurisprudence. The artist’s early work manifested a bold and liberal use of color and the tendency towards abstraction. He was quoted to have said that “each color had a mysterious life of its own.” His work was also said to have been influenced by French Impressionism, Art Nouveau, Neo-Impressionism, Expressionism and Fauvism. Later on during World War I, his characteristic style as an abstract painter was propelled by the influences of Cubism. After this, he was said to have actively promoted the Avant-garde art movement in Munich. He also founded the movement, New Artists’ Association. Later in his career, Kandinsky was said to have taught painting at the German Bauhaus school of architecture. Some of Kandinsky’ best works include; Violet Dominant, Dominant Curve, Fifteen, Moderation, and Tempered Élan.
