Venice Bridges
Strictly necessary, bridges have become true symbols of the city, and are among the most representative traits of Venice. In addition, every bridge, from the smallest to largest, from public to private schools, there are some more to this wonderful city and offers a unique view of tourists. There are over 350 bridges throughout the city, but some are certainly more famous than others, and can be considered important monuments of the city.
The four bridges over the Canal Grande, in particular, are some of the most famous bridges in Venice and is crossed daily by tourists and by the Venetians, too. Built on the city's largest waterway, which divides into two parts of Venice and is aligned with some of the most important buildings in the city of canals, bridges are tourist attractions and buildings necessary to establish contacts between the two sides of the channel and make it easier to visit the city.
The first bridge was built over the Grand Canal and possibly the most famous bridge in Venice is the Rialto Bridge. The bridge can still be seen today was built in 1588, but the first bridge in this area was built in 1175, it was a cover of the boats, which was replaced by a fixed bridge in 1265. After the collapse of the wooden bridge, a farm, which had to be built, and many architects have made their proposals. Antonio Da Ponte projects of cattle which had projected a bridge of Istria stone (a material often used in Venice), consisting of three ramps of Housing and shops covered by an elegant portico.
Until the 19th century, the Rialto Bridge is the only bridge over the Grand Canal, but in 1854 the Academy bridge, its name derived from the nearby Gallery Academy was built. At first it was an iron bridge, but to prevent damage other equipment necessary to get elected, well, a contest was announced for the project a stone bridge. Meanwhile, a temporary wooden bridge designed by Eugenio Mozzi was built, and has never been replaced, becoming the permanent bridge.
The third bridge, the Puente de los Descalzos, also known as Station Bridge, as it is very near the Santa Lucia train station was designed by Eugenio Mozzi and rebuilt in 1932. Instead of a single-span stone bridge Istria see now, before 1932 there was an iron bridge, built by the Austrians in 1858.
The last bridge to be built on the Grand Canal, the bridge of the Constitution, was recently completed to connect the station Piazzale Roma. The bridge, a project born architect Santiago Calatrava, was opened in September 2008, and even if it is a modern work, has some features that are typical of the monuments of Venice, as the stone of Istria, which has been used with other materials (steel, glass and bronze).
Addition of the four bridges over the Canal Grande, there are other interesting bridges of Venice, which tell us something about the history of the city and for this reason, it is worth seeing, as the Bridge of Sighs, Bridge of Bridge breasts and cuffs.
