Characteristics and the harmful effects of the only liquid metal
The oldest sample of mercury in about the fifteenth century BC or sixteen was found in an Egyptian tomb at Qurna, stored in a glass container. Mercury and cinnabar are mentioned in ancient manuscripts. The Chinese, Hindus, Egyptians, Greeks and Romans all recorded information on the subject and its ore. The Greek philosopher Theophrastus (372 to 287 BC), for example, describes a method for preparing mercury. Cinnabar rubbed with vinegar in a bowl of mud. Theophrastus wrote that cinnabar is in the silver mines. When the metal is first made, he says, people thought he could contain gold. They were deceived by the glossy appearance of the metal. They soon realized, however, was very different from gold.
Some mercury compounds are known to be toxic. For example, mercuric chloride (corrosive sublimate) is often used to kill pests and, sometimes, people. On the other hand, some mercury compounds are used as drugs. For example, mercury chloride (calomel) was used as a remedy for rashes. In the recent past the dangers of mercury are well known. Therefore, the use of mercury and its compounds are eliminated or made with caution.
Many reports on mercury, told its toxic effects. Slaves working in the mines of the Roman Mercury, for example, often died of exposure to mercury. Interestingly, trees and plants around these mines are affected. Mercury was sometimes very dangerous, and sometimes quite safe. Even current mine drank mercury dipped. Scientists now know that the effects of mercury depends on how it occurs.
Mercury fillings have been around a long time. A combination is an alloy of mercury with at least one metal. Amalgams are formed when a metal such as silver, dissolved in mercury. The process is similar to the salt solution in water. Fusion is used in mining to extract silver from ore. Money dissolved mercury and the amalgam is formed. Heat the mixture releases the money. This method has been used by minors in the sixteenth century.
Mercury is the only liquid metal. In fact, there is only one element liquid bromine is a non-metal. Mercury can be frozen at a temperature of -38.85 ° C (-37.93 ° F) and boils at 365.6 ° C (690.1 ° F). Its density is 13.59 grams per cubic centimeter. Mercury has two physical properties of interest. First Instead, it has a very high surface tension, a property of liquids that make them act as if covered with skin. For example, some insects can walk on water on the water surface. With care, a needle can float on the surface of water. These incidents are possible because water is the surface tension.
Mercury also a very good conductor of electricity. This property is used in a number of practical devices. This device is a mercury switch, as the guy who lights the lights on and off. A small amount of mercury can be placed in a small glass capsule. The capsule can be made the point back. As you change the Mercury goes from one end to the other. At one end of the capsule, the mercury may allow an electric current flowing through a circuit. At the other extreme, not mercury is present, so no current can flow. Mercury switches are easy to make and very effective. Mercury is moderately active. Does not react with oxygen in the air easily. Reacts with certain acids when they are hot, but not with cold acid.
The abundance of mercury in the Earth's crust is estimated at 0.5 parts per million. Therefore, it is one of 20 elements in common. This happens very rarely as an element. On the contrary, it is usually found as a compound. Its is the most common mineral cinnabar or mercury sulfide (HgS). Cinnabar is usually in a dark red powder. It is often called by the common name of Vermillion or Chinese. The largest producer of mercury outside the United States is Spain. U.S. Production Numbers not advertised to protect U.S. industries to reveal secrets of the great corporations. Other producers after Spain, Kyrgyzstan, Algeria, China and Finland. United States, mercury is a byproduct of gold mining. What comes eight gold mines in California, Nevada and Utah.
September natural isotopes of mercury, mercury-196-198 mercury, mercury-199, mercury-200, Mercury-201 mercury and mercury-known 202-204. A dozen radioactive isotopes of mercury are also known. Two radioactive isotopes of mercury and mercury-mercury 197-203 used in medicine. The two isotopes are used to study the brain and kidneys. The isotopes are injected into the body where they move in the brain and kidneys. Within of these bodies, the isotopes give off radiation that is detected by instruments held above the body. The radiation model provides information about does the brain and kidneys are working. Mercury is still as it was prepared hundreds of years. Cinnabar is heated in the air. The compound is low for to metallic mercury. Metallic mercury is purified by distillation.
The most important use of mercury is in the preparation of chlorine. Chlorine is produced by passing an electric current through the sodium chloride. There is a problem with this method, however. Sodium (Na) is a very reactive metal. If water is present, Sodium reacts violently with water. This reaction allows the production of chlorine much more difficult. In 1892 two English chemists have developed a method to solve this problem. Have a container with a layer of mercury at the bottom. As sodium is produced by electric current, dissolves in mercury, forming an amalgam. Sodium is unable to react with water. For many years, mercury "cell" was coined in 1892 a very popular method for the production of chlorine.
But today, companies are looking for other ways to make chlorine. They worry about the harmful effects of mercury. They also fear that mercury can enter the environment and human evil, animals and plants. The second most important use of mercury in many parts of the world is in the switches and other electrical applications. Again, there is growing concern about the effects of mercury. Many companies are turning to electronic switches. An application in which concerns about mercury had little effect is fluorescent. A fluorescent lamp containing mercury vapor (gas). When the lamp is on, an electric current passes through the mercury vapor and made to give an invisible radiation. The radiation reaches the inside of the glass tube whose walls are covered with a substance fluorescent. A phosphor is a material that emits visible light when struck by electrons. The tube lights up like radiation strikes the match.
Lamp Manufacturers have reduced the amount of mercury in fluorescent lamps by 60 percent. They developed ways to make the lamps work equally well with less mercury. However, mercury lamps are much more popular. Each lamp contains mercury now much less. But there are many lights, more than ever. For a time, mercury batteries were very popular. In the 1980s, more than 1,000 tons of mercury per year was used to make mercury batteries. These batteries are a particular problem the environment, however. People tend to just throw it away when no longer work. The case of split easily, releasing mercury into the environment. As a result, mercury, much less is now used to this type of battery. In 1996, less than one ton of mercury used in these batteries. Now they are almost entirely limited the military and medical uses. Mercury is also used in dental applications, measuring instruments (eg, mercury thermometers and barometers) coatings and mirrors. The use of mercury compounds is declining due to health problems.
By a tragic irony, a scientist who helped to improve the environment died as a result of their efforts. On June 8, 1997, Dartmouth College chemistry professor Karen Wetterhahn died from mercury poisoning. Less a year earlier, he had experimented with dimethyl mercury, when he spilled a small amount in your hands. Dimethyl mercury is one of the compounds of mercury toxic.
Wetterhahn study the effects of heavy metals (mercury, chromium, lead and arsenic) have on living things. She was worried by how these elements pollute the environment and cause disease in humans. In August 1996, Wetterhahn was the transfer of the mercury in a tube of dimethyl occurred the accident. He wore latex gloves, but they are not sufficient protection against hazardous chemicals. The mercury has seeped into your skin. Wetterhahn begins to feel the effects of exposure to six months. Then he began to lose his balance, his speech speech, vision and pain and loss of hearing. Tests showed that the system was eighty times the lethal dose of mercury. Wetterhahn died from mercury poisoning, June 8, 1997.
Wetterhahn's death led some security changes. Stickers on light boxes, latex gloves should warn against the use of gloves with hazardous chemicals. Workshops were organized to teach the selection of gloves. The dangers of dimethyl mercury have been described. And scientists were encouraged to use less dangerous chemicals such as dimethyl mercury. Overall, the death of a greater awareness of the scientific community of the potential hazards in the laboratory.
Although the toxicity of certain compounds Mercury has been known for many centuries, oddly enough, scientists have realized that metallic mercury and most of its compounds are highly toxic until recently. A form of mercuric chloride known as calomel, for example, has sometimes been used as a poison to kill people. It was also used extensively for kill fungus and larval control in agricultural crops. But even as recently as fifty years ago, there was little concern about metallic mercury and many compounds. Students in school chemistry has played often with droplets of mercury in the laboratory. So much so mercury is used for layer of coins and other metal parts.
Mercury was also widely used in dentistry. It is used to make amalgams, alloys of mercury with other metals, which is used to fill teeth. Most people today again, it is likely that dental fillings containing small amounts of metallic mercury. During the last fifty years, chemists have learned much more about the toxic effects of mercury in the moment and most of its compounds. They now know that mercury enters the body itself very easily. Its vapors through the skin into the bloodstream. Its vapors can be inhaled. And, of course, can be swallowed. In all these cases, the mercury enters the bloodstream and cells. Does not interfere with essential chemical reactions and can cause illness and death.
Sometimes these effects occur over long periods of time. People who work with mercury, for example, can take small amounts of mercury in months or years. Health problems develop very slowly. These problems may include inflammation of the mouth and gums, loose teeth, kidney damage and muscles, arms and legs trembling, depression, anxiety and personality changes.
Back in 1800, most of the negative effects of Mercury and its compounds are not yet known. Hatters at the time made common use of mercury in their trade. It has been used to treat the felt and beaver fur that lined on the covers. Finally, exposure to mercury began to cause changes in the body of the Hatters'. His personality and his behavior became erratic. Recognition Personality strange hatters, people often use the expression "mad as a hatter." In fact, the author Lewis Carroll (1832-1898) created a character of Alice in Wonderland which has its origin in the symptoms of mercury poisoning: The Mad Hatter.
People can be exposed to large doses mercury in short periods of time. In such cases, even more serious health problems can occur. These include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, kidney damage and death in just one or two weeks. And it remains safe for the use of mercury in dental fillings? This question is the source of controversy. Some people say that some mercury is lost as metal fillings are safe for people. Other people think that dentists should not take chances with this dangerous metal. They should stop using mercury fillings entirely.
