Dance Monkey, Dance! Tips to overcome Stage Fright
Last night at Banjo Jim, who had the fight or flight reaction when I got on stage to sing. My heart was beating in my chest, my throat constricts, and I felt I had to urinate, even if I had just peed several times. I was eager to be back in New York, playing and singing in front of people I know and love. I was disappointed that fifty minutes could go wrong, because the unexpected shock. The scene is what I like to do when I do it well, and the opposite when I'm there a slow death. If you have ever been afraid of public speaking, any anxiety or Stage fear felt what I felt last night.
In the front three rows are Abelino and Luke, who both did their best, "sings in a day" singing class earlier in the day. We had to talk about stage fright. I talked to a number of tools to overcome stage fright, and there I was with a loud buzz that enters my brain and hands trembling. I was a vocal coach and voice teacher for almost twenty years. I made a lot of singing lessons, and worked on performance with hundreds of voice students, I spent hours and hours helping students with fear of public speaking, but I was there, sweaty and tongue tied. Everything could do was say what I'm Joie Blaney reminded me says – not nervous, you're excited to play – ".. Apparently, I am very happy to see I'm very glad you're here, "and said:
A voice teacher can also nervous.
A tool has come to my head, a court the song that once learned, and got to see some sun in the middle of my chest. (Lucas called the technique of small sun "hippy-ish, but useful.") That let the sun rise until my body and then to fill the room. I could not open my eyes and see everyone in my room Sun It gave me focus.
Between the first two songs, let me take my time and I have given the guitar, I held my breath, slowly backwards from ten, twice. This calmed my diaphragm and arrested my voice trembling. My concentration increase. (Control of the membrane is one of the tips to sing louder than you can give a singer or a speaker.)
I had the opportunity to think through the story of the next song, the sounds of piano, then as if by magic, I felt like swimming in place sinking. My room and I had not peed. I felt so comfortable on stage when I sing the wrong words "This can not be my life," my last album, became part of the Show everyone felt more connected There are no mistakes in vivo -. Improvisation only.
I was friends with the comedian Steven Wright for seventeen years, said this morning that I appreciate the nervousness, but he prefers to do so.
He said when he was first on stage was very, very scared, like most people. And if you have a very expressionless face and monotone voice anyway, I was so scared I was completely blank, your voice was quite monotonous. I was so focused on the memory of their jokes and say it correctly in the correct order. "You might think it's a negative, but for me are a good thing, because what people call influenced my character. "
It is one of the biggest shock of all time comedians can not be the same character.
Not that I have a fear of being judged, laughed or forget the words. It is a natural response seems to occur randomly. Sometimes when seems that the risks are very high and when sometimes it seems crazy that there are problems at all. That cell, I'm going to be eaten. My mind goes, "The Monkey Dance, dance or you die.It could happen at any time at all, but I love to sing and play live, so continue to take that risk.
Lucas asked me to sing a list of tips and tools I use when I'm nervous. Here are a few (sometimes only one does the job):
I say I'm not nervous, I'm excited.
Remember that whatever happens, I can not sleep in my bed later.
I hold my breath. This works better than simply inhaling and exhaling deeply, because the diaphragm stops boiling. No blow. Let's go slowly.
I put me in a place that feels great and beautiful: the top of a mountain, the sea, or in the forest. I believe all the space in my imagination and bring everyone inside.
I can build a small sun.
I see and follow the thoughts of the song I thought, as if they were on my mind for the first time. I followed the story.
I imagine that the minds of some people and dead animals that can calm my mind and put their faces in various places around the room.
I can listen to music. If I play with others, listening to playing.
I repeat a mantra in inside – every note I sing is beautiful, every note I sing is beautiful, rather than – I suck, I suck, it sucks. "
