Is not it time for the metric system to stop Goiing turn?

Growing Kingdom United States in the 1950, I was accustomed to such things as inches, feet, yards, ounces (liquid and solid), pints, pounds, etc. Then I entered my class physics first and was reversed by the metric system.

"My God is better! Why not use it?" I exclaimed.

After all, remember that a kilometer is 1,000 meters is much easier to remember than a mile is 5280 feet and foot in turn is 12 inches. Recalling that a kilo is 1000 grams is much easier to remember than the strong pound is 16 oz. Recalling that a liter is 1000 ml, it is much easy to remember a pint is 16 fluid ounces, two liters (32 ounces) is the fourth, and four quarts (128 ounces) is a gallon.

The System C also seems much easier than the system of degrees Fahrenheit. After all, water freezes at 0 º C and boils at 100 ° C, which seems much more more logical for the freezing of water at 32 ° F and boils at 212 ° F.

So why the United States, Britain, and a number of other countries that use those systems rare?

I have the answer for the moment I got out of physics class. Although mathematically understand metric units did not make sense for them. If I went to a restaurant, I knew exactly what he was doing, so I ordered August 1, 1910 or 12 oz steak But if the menu is shown 230, 280 or 340 grams of meat, which was completely lost. Similarly, if you were 60 miles, I realized that this meant about an hour on the road. But if I had to drive 95 kilometers, I had the slightest idea what that meant – other than it seemed much further.

Each change is a routine is difficult, although it is clearly an improvement. As will be some time before Liberia, Myanmar (Burma) and the United States, only three countries that have not yet adopted the metric system, finally make the change. But it seems inevitable.

France adopted the metric system in 1799, one of the consequences of the French Revolution. Japan became official in 1868 and Russia in 1917. Even Britain, that spread initially inches, feet, miles, ounces, pounds, etc, worldwide, has joined the club in 1965.

Now that the world has been so massive metric (and the holdouts are likely to do so in the foreseeable future), the question is: Why do not end job? The fact is that even countries still use a number of metrics, non-metric units are largely irrational and mathematically heavy.

For example, why 60 hours per minute and one minute 60 seconds, when an hour is 100 minutes and 100 minutes seconds? Also, why 24 days one hour instead of 10 hours, each hour consisting of 100 minutes and each minute into 100 seconds? And why stop there? Why the year has 12 months instead of 10?

If you think about it, the year of reference will be made for ten months until Julius Caesar (July) and Augustus (August) it blocked his vanity. Remnants of the former ten-month calendar can still be seen in the names of the last four months of the year: September (septum = seven), October (octo = eight), November (novum = nine) and December (ten =). These should have been updated for ages.

Another unit seems strange is the 360 degrees of a circle, each degree is divided into 60 minutes and each minute divided into 60 seconds. Impossible circle of 100 degrees, divided into 100 minutes, divided into 100 seconds?

Well, yes it can.

Some mathematicians may argue that a system based on 60 has some advantages for calculations in the metric system on the basis of 10. For specialized applications, which can maintain the system at 360 degrees but there is no reason why the rest of us must suffer with him. In fact, for some applications the circle of 360 degrees was abandoned in favor of circle two rad, based on the formula for the circumference C = 2? r (circumference = pi times the radius twice) ..

It is a convention has 60 seconds in a minute, 60 minutes in an hour and 24 hours in a day. For some reason, we chose these units. It makes no sense to divide the year into 100 days, just to make calculations easier.

Such nonsense is not beyond human ignorance. In the 19 th century, a state U.S. was about to pass a law establishing the same 3 feet on the belief that the use of fair value (3. 3.14159265 …) was too heavy!

In considering possible changes, we must be aware that the definitions of basic units can change over time, often due to the evolution of science.

For example, since 1898, the kilogram, the basic unit of mass, was defined in terms of the international prototype kilogram (IPK). This is a purpose built block alloys carefully kept under environmental conditions at the International Bureau of Weights and Measures in Sevres, France. However, since the IPK is subjected to mass drift (Mass changes over time), serious discussions are underway to redefine the kilogram in terms of a fixed number of 12 atoms of carbon atoms silicon, or other fundamental rights, reproducible physical properties.

For millennia, the prospect of "squaring the circle" is still challenging mathematics. In 1882, it has proved impossible because of the transcendental nature of pi.
