When It Comes To Music Is There Just Too Much Choice These Days?
Just over a decade ago my entire music collection was about 100 CDs. Every one of them meant something to my and I knew each track listing off by heart. Whenever I bought a new CD I would spend days getting to know all the songs on it and it really was a big event. And if you were to take the time to count all the tracks that were on these CDs, I think it would total around 12,000 altogether.
These days with my iPod I have double that amount of songs in my pocket when I walk around town, and double that again on my laptop at home. I am adding to my music collection all the time and there are many songs on my computer that I still haven’t managed to listen to. But because of this, I feel that the enjoyment in owning music and listening to it is kind of dying a little bit.
It has been a long time since I actually listened to an entire album; I’m not even sure if they are still called albums these days. I have my IPod on shuffle and most of the time I haven’t even got a clue who is singing. I never really give songs a chance anymore because if I don’t like it straight away, then I just skip it. Doing this with my music was unheard of for me a few years back. I would imagine that if things keep on going the way they are going we will soon be only downloading 30 second snippets of songs; there is just so much choice and we feel as if we have to have it all.
If only we could turn back time to when proper vinyl albums were available so that we could start learning to appreciate music again. In those days looking through a person’s record collection could tell you a lot about them; these days not very much because we all have much the same in our collections.
