Parents; can I ask you something?
This has always bothered me so maybe you can give me some insight.
When I was in grade 4 or 5 I got this toy, a “Micky-Max” which comes with all these little pieces/people. It was shaped like a Crocodile or Dragon’s Head and glowing eyes. I remember owning it. But 1 day I couldn’t find it and I asked my mom and she kindof shrugged it off, like I’d imagined ever owning it. It was so weird, and now I think about it I’m certain she was lying, but she never explained why or what happened to it.
*I don’t even care, it’s a sodding toy. I’m more curious about the lying.
And when I was in grade 1, our dog kept eating rocks and we had to put her to sleep, but my parents told us she went off to live on a farm. Now I’m grown up I’m sure they were lying because everytime I asked if we could visit she’d basically say she couldn’t get ahold of the farmers.
So do parents lie to their children to protect the children? Or is it to protect themselves, so the kids won’t realize they’re liars?
My mother was very very honest with me, and I always really apperciated that. I think its wrong for parents to lie unless theres a good reason for it. For example, you wouldn’t tell a 4 year old about sex… but in the same regards you shouldn’t completely lie and tell them it comes from santa claus and unicorns, either.
It just depends on the age, and the content. Lying about putting your dog down doesn’t make much sense because it is your first experience with death, and should be handled delicately. It would have helped you deal with death later down the road if it were handled right. (i.e. you had an outlet for your emotions, and people to support you through it.)
