Electric charge, capacitance, and geometry?
If I have a capacitor which a portion of it has a ceramic dielectric with a dielectric strength of 1000V and a gap of 1/16 of an inch, and the rest of the capacitor contains plates taper to a point, have a smaller gap, and a liquid dielectric with a dielectric value of 75.
Where will the charge build up or what point of the capacitor will hold the most charge.
If the charge is greater than 1000V will the charge leak through the weaker dielectric?
Will the charge collect at the point where the plates are closest together. even if the dielectric at that point is stronger than where the plates are further apart and the dielectric strength is weaker?
You’ll have to be clearer than this or you’ll get more gibberish answers like the 1st one. You didn’t give the dielectric constant of the ceramic or the breakdown voltage of the liquid. The charges will tend to collect where their potential energy is minimum. They won’t all be in the same place because of mutual repulsion. PE per unit charge is proportional to voltage, which is proportional to separation d and inversely proportional to dielectric constant kd. Thus charge will tend to concentrate where d/kd is minimum.
