Rembrandt And Laughing

Valuing it at only $3,100, the auction house thought that the portrait was only a knockoff of a 17th century Rembrandt. For the British buyer that paid 1,500 times more than that, he surely knew what situation he put himself in. A piece like this one could have easily raked in $30 to $40 million according to a collector who specializes in Dutch and Flemish masters and for him the price given at the auction was rather disappointing. After being asked to change the value of the painting the art expert from Sotheby’s declined to do so. Considering the works of Rembrandt they only come on the market once every few years and so this sale is such a rare opportunity.

During his early 20s in 1628 was when Rembrandt made this self portrait and he was then in his hometown of Leiden. It was his experimentation with expressions that made him use a mirror and his face at a time when he was already making a name for himself as an artist. It has an incredible presence. The painting previously had been in the hands of an English family for more than 100 years. Many people believed that it was either a student or an imitator of Rembrandt’s. Considering the poor photographs that could have resulted in the presentation of little of the painting’s luminosity or depth, these could have led to the low evaluation from the auction house. Pointing to Rembrandt were the materials, contour, brush stroke, and monogram, all of these pointed to Rembrandt and a 23 page analysis was made to support how he was responsible for the little work. Suspecting that the painting was a genuine Rembrandt from the monogram RHL, the winner of the auction may have been familiar with the rare style the artist used lasting for about a year. For the monogram, it meant Rembrandt Harmenszoon of Leiden. It was the signature HL that the auction house recorded in its assessment. More convincing are these initials for they were painted onto the background and the direction of the brush strokes match another one of Rembrandt’s monograms.

What confused the experts was the body shape of the laughing Rembrandt. What it had was little description of the anatomy underneath other than the metal armor and glossy shirt appearing amorphous, a wooly blanket was used for clothing, and it lay in lumpy folds. His later works also saw the same distinct contour he applied in this particular work. When it comes to the contour there is a certain autonomy to it and this must be because Rembrandt was trying out this particular way of painting the body for the first time.

Matching in size and type to other Rembrandt paintings is the thin copper plate on which the piece is painted. Underneath this painting is a second painting according to xrays and these show a similar characteristic as that of the other Rembrandt works. In 1800 no one knew where the exact location of the painting was and a Flemish engraver committed a mistake and attributed the original to the Dutch painter Frans Hals after a reproductive print was made as he failed to see how the face in the picture was that of Rembrandt’s. Afterwards the location of the painting again became a mystery.
